Pastor Stewart says he felt called to start this new contemporary church in his hometown.  Already the church has baptized 10 people at the indoor pool at the Pickens County YMCA, have had weddings and even funerals. But most important is their commitment to meeting needs in Pickens.  The church’s mission is to fulfill the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:36-40) and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20). One way they do that is by engaging the culture in Pickens through mission work. Whether through feeding the hungry, passing out candy in Trunk of Treats in October, helping out Country Santa, or other mission opportunities, New Beginnings wants to impact lives and meet needs in Pickens. Almost every instance of Jesus ministering, he always took care of the physical needs and then the spiritual needs. We want to do the same.  Think of the blind getting their sight, feeding the multitudes, raising the dead, and healing the sick. We take seriously Matthew 25:31-46.“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’” (Matthew 25:40).

A ribbon cutting was held for Murphy’s Corner Ice Cream andSandwichparlor located onWest Main Streetin Pickens. School House Styles held a ribbon cutting at the salon located at 909 Terrapin Crossing Road, Liberty/Six Mile on Nov. 10, 2010. Tanya Larsen moved with her family from Phoenix, Arizona this past year.   She has built the School House Salon in the old Gates School House in the original 1-4th grade classroom. Tanya worked hard at keeping the original school room feel while incorporating the comforts and services of a hair salon.

Since building, Tanya has met with some of the former students of Gates and welcomes any visitors wishing to reminisce of their time spent in the classroom.

The Pickens Sentinel held a ribbon cutting in June to celebrate its 139-history in the community and to announce its relocation to Garvin Street. “We’re proud to be the oldest business in Pickens County,” said Sentinel General Manager Sandy Foster. “A lot has changed since 1871, but Pickens still remains a great community, and the Pickens Sentinel staff is proud to be a part of the newspaper of record for most of the city’s history.”

Founded by the Maj. D.F. Bradley, the paper has changed ownership several times during its long history; but our commitment to bring local news produced by a local, award-winning staff has remained steadfast, she said. One of the Sentinel’s greatest additions in the last two years was the development of a new Web site that is updated daily. In this past month alone, www.pickenssentinel.com has received more than 8,000 visits from 5,784 unique visitors. In the past year, it has received more than 92,000 visits from more than 61,000 unique visitors.

Tim Hartog owner was recognized as one of the top 10 chefs in Northern Californian and brings his unique cooking talents to Main Street Pickens.
