Fort Prince George Project

The Pickens County Historical Society along with several individuals, are working on a project for the reconstruction of Fort Prince George. The original site of the fort was covered over with water in the construction of Lake Keowee. The fort was one of 3 forts build by the British between 1753 and 1756 to keep peace between the Cherokee and Creeks while maintaining a trade route from Charleston. Fort Prince George’s sister fort, Fort Loudoun in Tennessee was reconstructed in the early 1980’s and draws between 200,000 and 225,000 visitors per year. The restoration of Fort Prince George is not only a historical site but also would provide a vehicle for economic growth for the area.
