Over the past several months the Chamber has been working to improve the benefits it offers to Chamber members. A membership brochure has been developed which outlines the many services the Chamber provides, not only to its members, but to the community.
One of the services the chamber provides is information to the many visitors and newcomers to Pickens. The Chamber provides a list of churches, civic organizations, government agencies, along with other community information. It also provides the visitor with information about the many attractions in the area, answers questions about businesses and provides information about the businesses within the Chamber. The Chamber is the main stop for visitors coming to Pickens.
Hagood Mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and is one of the oldest known surviving grist mills still producing grain products in South Carolina. The wheel and the mechanical components of the Mill were rebuilt in the mid-1970s and restoration work continued to the mid-1990s. Today, Hagood Mill boasts several restored buildings and a visitor’s center. Last week the Mill launched a campaign to raise $400,000 to create a South Carolina Rock Art Center on the Hagood Mill site. The site has over 40 rock carvings chiseled into the landscape by prehistoric American Indians. The carvings date back over 1,000 years and shows rare human figures. The Rock Center will preserve the carvings and create a way to save the rare historic find for future generations. South Carolina Chamber of Commerce:
The 2010 South Carolina Legislative session is just a couple of months away. The South Carolina Chamber of Commerce has put together a list of issues that are important to businesses across the State. One of the first is economic development. In 2010, the General Assembly’s concentration must be on job creation, beginning with a focused economic development incentive package to lead South Carolina’s economic recovery. Below is the State Chamber’s recommendations to improve economic development:
The South Carolina Chamber supports:
- Achieving comprehensive tort reform, including non-economic damage caps, punitive damage caps, limits on appeals bonds and seatbelt admissibility
- Funding the South Carolina Department of Commerce, including the Closing Fund.
- Dedicated funding toward the maintenance of South Carolina’s roads and bridges.
- Funding for the South Carolina Manufacturing Extension Partnership (SCMEP) including particular investment tax credits.
- Streamlining the environmental permitting process.
- Continued expansion of the state’s ports system, overseen by the SCPA.
- Adequate, dedicated and recurring funding for broad tourism marketing and matching dollars around the state.
